Doctors Without Borders In Somalia

The International aid agency Doctors Without Borders has been helping give medical service in Somalia since 1991. Recently, groups of Somalians have attacked, captured, and killed many doctors trying to help this poor war-filled country.  The board of Doctors Without Borders has deemed Somalia too dangerous for the doctors and have decided to pull the doctors out and close all operations in Somalia. This will have a catastrophic effect on this country. In the last year Doctors Without Borders has helped deliver 7,300 babies, gave almost 625,000 medical consolations, admitted 41,100 people to hospitals, immunized 58,000 people, and help over 30,000 malnourished children. Without this agency there will be a lot of sick and distressed people that won't be able to get the medical attention they need. The saddest part of all this is that the government isn't doing a thing to help these doctors risking their lives to help the citizen of Somalia. I think this is really sad and that the Somalian government should try to get them back to help their country so that their country won't fall apart.. What do you think about this incident? I got the idea for this post from Noor's post about the agency leaving this country.

  1. I think that the government should take action to problem, because people are dying and nobody's doing anything about it. That is obviously wrong and barbaric, I think, to kill people that are trying help you. I also looked up that 8 doctors that went into Somalia died. The doctors that died were usually gruesomely killed with a bloody mess all over the place. I think that the doctors should go back into Somalia, but with weapons. I also think that the Somalians should accept the doctors.

  2. Wow Brett, this is really sad all these innocent doctors trying to help these people are being killed. I did some research of my own and found that Doctors without Borders was founded by the French and is now used all over in war zones such as Africa in this example. In 2007, 26,000 doctors and interns volunteered to supply help in over 60,000 countries. We are very fortunate that we live in America because we have no idea how much these people are suffering. Like you said, a lot of sick and distressed people don't get the medical attention they need but for us, we just drive our cars to a hospital and get help but a lot of people can't afford cars in Africa none the less afford medical treatment. I 100% agree with you when you say that the Somalian government should bring Doctors Without Borders back and it also makes me sad how the government isn't doing anything about it. I love your post and hope these people get help.

  3. I think that it is terrible that the citizens of Somalia would capture and kill the doctors that came to help them. There have been 16 deaths of Doctor Without Borders staff. It's going to be interesting to see how the Somalians react to the Doctors Without Borders retreating from Somalia. Maybe if the conditions in Somalia gets way worse, the Doctors Without Borders will go back to help. Do you think that the doctors will go back to help?
