The Festival of Lights!




There are many festivals that take place in India every year but, Diwali is one the most memorable. Diwali is celebrated all over India and is either in October or November, which is controlled by the cycle of the moon. This year Diwali starts on October 21, and last for five days, ending on October 26. Diwali is a celebration of the New Year and also symbolizes good over evil or light over dark. Another name for Diwali is "The Festival of Lights". The first day of this festival is called Dhanteras, on this day it's a tradition to buy gold. Although each day has its own meaning, the third day is the most special. This day consist of many diyas, which are small clay lamps and candles, lots of festive fireworks, and most anything that will bring like to the house. Many families like to get together at this time and have a big feast. The fourth day of the amazing celebration marks the actual first day of the New Year, much use this time for giving gifts and best wishes for the seasons to come. I think that it would be very fun to visit India during this celebration because you could learn so much about their culture, do you?

    A Diyas can also be called a Divaa, Deepa, Deepam, or Deepak. A Diyas is a lamp with a cotton wick dipped in vegetable oils.The oil clay lamp is to represent defeat and the gain of knowledge. This oil bowl is kept in temples, houses, and basically everywhere during the time of the festival. The festival of lights is really called Diwali and the festival preparations and rituals typically extend over a five days. On the 25th day everyone leaves the streets to go into their homes and renovate,clean or decorate for Diwali.
