I am very interested in Alex's post on drones patrolling Ol Pejeta Conservancy. The drones would be patrolling the wildlife preserve from poachers who come to hunt the black rhinos and other animals that are wanted for things like ivory. Ol Pejeta is the largest black rhino sanctuary in East Africa, protecting and raising animals over 90,000 acres of land. With all of this land, there are problems such as poaching or even monitoring population growth. Installing transmitters in the rhinos has been another idea, but that is very risky. First, it is very dangerous for a ground crew to go sneak up on a wild animal. What's worse is that in order to install a transmitter, the rhino has to be shot with a tranquilizer. Second, the battery in the transmitter would need to be replaced every 1-2 years due to the distance they transmit from. That would be way to much of a drug to inject n a rhino. I thought it was really weird and crazy on how that these poachers were so severe in problem that they had to hire drones with guns to help these animals. This technology that these people are using is called air wire. These are, like the picture above, little lifestream cameras that are all around the wilderness, and it is built to be hard to identify to criminals. These cameras allow captains of drone groups to direct where to go, and where is causing trouble. However, this, like said above, is a very risky idea, but i think it is worth it, because they can just install solar batteries, which they can change in a more extended time. What else do you think that people should do?
