The million year old city, as
people like to call it, of Damascus, Syria seems to be that old. It was founded
in the third millennium B.C. That is an extremely long time ago. About the same
time or even before the Greeks and the Romans! It is also one of the only
cities to be inhabited at all times no matter what. Most cities from that time
period have had their town's population flee the city, but not the mighty city
of Damascus! Archaeologists have found ruins that say that this city has been
around since 8,000 or 10,000 B.C! The city of Damascus has many features from
the Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine, and Islamic civilization. Despite the HUGE
influence from the Islamic civilization they have a Roman out plan and the
orientation of the city is Greek like. There are many important sites in
Damascus such as the Souq al-Hamidiyya it is a street filled with little
boutiques and shops, and the Umayyad mosque that was once a temple to Jupiter
and the Assyrians are by far ones of the most important. The "million year old" city will always be remembered in history. Would you ever consider traveling to Damascus?

Wow! It's unbelievable how old Syria is, I really didn't think about it. If I had a pass port to Syria, then I would absolutely fly there in a heart beat. Mostly to observe and learn their culture. Another reason would be, enjoying the sights and views. Lastly I would like to mention that, I love the website you put as a hyperlink. It contains a lot of fun facts with clear information about the "Million Year Old City".
ReplyDeleteDamascus sounds really cool, and definitely very old! I didn't even know when the third millennium B.C. was! I looked it up, and it was over 5000 years ago! You also mentioned so many different cultures that have had an influence on, or have settled in Damascus. The French were there, the Romans, Islams, and more. I think it is so interesting how many people affected the lifestyle and culture of Damascus.
