Modern Cultures: Palm Islands? Eh... Close Enough!

Dubai is a part of the UAE located in the Middle East, which you probably already knew. That being said, there are a lot of cool and interesting places you can visit in Dubai. I picked the Palm Islands over all of the other attractions because they just seemed more appealing to me. Basically, the Palm Islands are man-made peninsulas reaching into the Persian Gulf, branching off in many different directions to, quite obviously, look like a palm tree. The structures on the branches include residential, leisure, and entertainment purposes. If you were to live on the palm islands, would you live closer to the ocean, or closer to land?

  1. To whoever may choose to comment on this post, I would wonder just how exactly these islands were constructed...through what sorcery? Man-made islands in the shape of a palm tree? How is that possible? (Great post Noel! Thanks for getting us all started. And two students may still comment on this...I don't count!)

  2. If I were to live on the palm islands I would probably live closer to the ocean. Most people probably would. In fact I looked up some information on the palm islands, and something I learned is that the palm islands are shaped like a palm tree because they wanted to provide space for beach front real estate. You would imagine that most people would live closer to the ocean than land. Also the palm islands are the world's largest artificial islands. These are part of the United Arab Emirates which are also artificial islands. These are huge, but why do you think that people would make artificial islands even though their are real ones?

  3. Those islands are really cool, and I would actually prefer the heart of the archipelago. However, the base of the structure is made of steel, and it's man-made. The base would obliterate if a cyclone (Indian Ocean Version of Hurricane) or the steel base will rust in a little while and float off somewhere. This is because Korea did the same but in the Han River. When a Typhoon struct it, it floated of and was cut off. Would you think it would be safe on the Island? Would you be able to survive on it? Will the island even last 100 years?
