Damascus, a city that is older than dirt.( not really, but it's pretty close)
Damascus is the oldest continually populated city in the world. Not Damascus,Virginia this Damascus is in Syria. It has been the cultural, and economic capitol of Syria since millenniums ago. It was first populated about ten thousand years ago. It has been ruled by many different countries over these couple thousand years including Rome, Armenia, The Ottoman Empire, and many others. Some of these rulers have left architecture such as the Mausoleum of Saladin and the Umayyad Mosque. The Umayyad Mosque is one of the oldest and largest mosques of all time and is considered by some Muslims to be the fourth holiest place on earth. If you don't like old architecture or history then Damascus has nothing to really interest you, maybe instead you'd like to visit Damascus,Virginia I've heard its a very nice and tranquil town. I am sort of joking, Damascus does have a lot of nice modern restaurants as well as a beautiful mountain overlooking the city called Mount Qasioun. Maybe Syria isn't the best place to visit right because of the recent conflicts, but Damascus seems like a nice place overall. My question to you is would you rather see Umayyad Mosque, the Mausoleum of Saladin,or not go at all and see some place else?
