The Hunter is now Hunted

Watch out you illegal rhino poachers, because there's an eye in the sky searching for you know! The age of robots have expanded to the abilities to protect one of the most endangered animals in the world the rhinos of Africa. In Africa, the demand for rhino horns and elephant tusks are very high. As a result of this, 50% more rhinos have been poached than last year. Now armed with these drones instead of the poachers hunting the rhinos, the drones called "aerial rangers" are now hunting them. These so called "aerial rangers", are unmanned drones armed with high definition cameras, with high zoom in capabilities. These drones are now being planned to be deployed in a wildlife reserve called Ol Pejeta. Although to some this idea is good, I can king of think of some problems of using drones to monitor poachers. Like wouldn't there be complaints of privacy issues? What do you think?

  1. There would probably be some privacy complaints, but they would help catch many poachers. The main problem I observed is that the drones fly along a set path. This means that they may be where any rhinos are at the time, so they may not catch some of the poachers. To solve this problem they should have each drone follow a specific rhino, and do something like tag the rhinos so the drone knows which one to follow. Overall the drones seem like a good idea, but they nee to improve on the system a bit to maximize its efficiency .

  2. I don't think that privacy issues are going to be an problem considering that where these rhino reserves are located, are not exactly in the middle of NYC. I think the biggest problem is going to be the drones maintenance and care the plains of Africa are not exactly a forgiving place especially if the drones has to make a crash landing it could be never found again. In response to Roberts point although the drones do fly along along a set path they do not have to, if the drones sees poachers than it can react by alert rangers in the near area. That is not the drones main attribute in article it clearly states that its main attribute is the fact that if you have a choice between stealing a horn from that park or the one with drone well the choice is obvious, you are going to go to the park that is easier to steal from.-Will
