Hammurabi Code from Ancient Times

To "become"one of the ancients you must first learn about them and their ancient civilization. One thing I found interesting back from the ancient times, was the Hammurabi Code. The Hammurabi Code was first created by a ruler of an empire called Hammurabi. That is where the code name comes from. The code is when (for example), one man breaks a leg of a gentleman, then they would break their own leg. Or also in the law, if a person accidentally broke a law then they are just as guilty as a person who was determined to brake a law. Rules are different for higher status people ranging from slaves to wealthy gentlemen.
A quote from the actual code is "If a surgeon performed a major operation on a citizen with a bronze lancet (knife) and has caused the death of this citizen...his hand shall be cut off."
Question: Do you think that the code is fair???

  1. The quote makes things tough. Would people train to become surgeons if a mistake could cost them so dearly? That is different than a crime, yet it appears the code doesn't treat crimes and accidents too differently. I do wonder if a code like that might deter people from wanting to commit horrible crimes. Maybe it would change things and maybe it wouldn't. What do you think?
