Ford Freedom Essay Contest

Fine students,

I just heard about this contest and thought you might like to submit an entry. I would certainly offer a few extra credit points if you take the time to send in an essay. Click the link below to read up on the contest details. Notice that this year's Honoree is Nelson Mandela!

Give it a shot. We have strong writers and I am confident that we could end up with a winner!

Best,
~Mr. H.

Here is the email that I received (from Mrs. Mayes) about the contest:

Dear educator,

On behalf of the Ford Motor Company Fund, the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History and Michigan K.I.D.S., the educational nonprofit for The Detroit News and Detroit Free Press, I would like to invite you to, once again, encourage your students in Grades 4-8 to enter the annual Ford Freedom Award Essay Contest.

The theme of the 2014 Ford Freedom Award Program, "The Power of Perseverance," is epitomized by 2014 Ford Freedom Award Honoree Nelson Mandela, the revered anti-apartheid activist who spent more than 25 years in prison before becoming the first black South African president.

In celebration of the 2014 Ford Freedom Award theme, Michigan students in Grades 4-8 are invited to submit essays on the following topic:
Describe a time in your life when you could have given up, but chose instead to persevere despite difficulties, and in so doing achieved success. Describe the situation, the obstacles to success and the results achieved.

Contest Deadline:
Mailed or hand-delivered to the Charles H. Wright Museum for receipt by Wednesday, April 9.
