Qabli Pulao is the most popular dish of Afghanistan. Lamb kabab is a favorite of the Afghans. Afghan people are found of non-vegetarian meals. Food is eaten with right hand, using a kind of bread called nan as a scoop. Dari (Afghans version of Persia), is the most spoken language. There is also Pashtu, Uzbek, Tukmen, and 30 minor languages. Most people in Afghanistan are bilingual. The minor languages are Aimaq, Arabic, Ashkun, Azerbaijani, Balochi, Brahui, Darwazi, Gawar-Bati, Gujari, Hazaragi, Jakati, Kamviri, Karakalpak, Kazakh, Kirghiz, Malakhel, Mogholi, Pashayi, Sanglechi-Ishkashimi, Tangshewi, Tatar, Tirahi, Uyghur, Waigali, Wakhi, Warduji, and Wotapuri-Katarqali. Did you know that they have a festival for the new year called Nau Roz? Jeshyn-Afghan Day is their Independence Day and it's on August 19th, how many people know that?

No I did not know that there was a festival for new years called Nau Roz (Which actually spelled NowRoz). I have researched about NowRoz on npr.org that NowRoz actually means "New day" as new year and is a 13 day celebration. NowRoz is an ancient festival that marks the beginning of spring and celebrates the rebirth of nature. This holiday has a lot to do with green foods to show that winter is not eternal. At every home in Afghanistan during NowRoz people put seven items on there table because seven is a lucky number in there country, and each item had to begin with a 's', that they out on there tables. You have to admit Afganistan had pretty cool holidays. (;
ReplyDeleteI never knew about Jeshyn-Afghan Day or Nowruz! Much like Abi, I looked it up, and discovered that it is one of seven festivals and occurs on the spring equinox (3/20). There are multiple myths surrounding it, and was celebrated as the first day of the calender as apposed to the 79th day like in 2014! A side from tales, food, and history, another part of this day is cleaning! The spring cleaning is an entire cleaning of a house. So much for a fun holiday!
